To enrich and improve our nation's understanding of itself by giving life and human connection to the epic and tragic events of America's Civil War through professional-grade living history experiences.

Our Mission
Our Vision

To help America more fully realize her new birth of freedom by personally connecting her citizens to the turmoil and sacrifice that brought it about.

  • Honor : We have honor when we hold ourselves to high standards at all times.

    • Integrity : We do what is right at all times, simply because it is right.

    • Service : By giving of ourselves, we help others and better our nation.

    • Humility : When we are less full of ourselves, we save room in our minds for bigger things.

    • Faith : Belief in a power greater than ourselves guides us on the straight and narrow.

  • Courage : Being brave in the face of obstacles allows us to achieve what we aspire to.

    • Strength : Strength of body, mind, and spirit gives us the power to accomplish great things.

    • Discipline : Self-control and structure give us confidence in our abilities.

    • Leadership : The ability to direct ourselves and others toward a common goal inspires greatness in all.

    • Perseverance : Always pushing on and never giving up makes us unstoppable.

  • Comradery : Bonds of friendship are our greatest asset.

    • Loyalty : If we can't count on each other, little is left that is worth counting on.

    • Trust : Falseness creates divisions that we cannot easily close.

    • Respect : Appreciating our differences gives strength to our similarities.

    • Unity : A house divided against itself cannot stand.

Our values
Who We Are

The Texas Civil War Living History Institute is an organization dedicated to improving America’s understanding of its Civil War through living history and reenactment. Our approach focuses on providing professional-grade, immersive living history experiences at historic sites and in communities around the region and across the nation. In this authentic historical environment, both our members and our audience gain a new appreciation for our nation’s defining conflict and its impact on our lives today. Our volunteer staff strives to provide a safe, exciting, and enriching program for our participants, as well as an historically accurate, immersive, and eye-opening experience for our audiences.

Our History

Around the time of the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War, our founder and young leader in the reenactment community, Collin Jefferson, noted several issues surrounding the living history community and the nation's historical education. First, the reenactment community (which came of age in the 1960’s and 1970’s), was greatly in need of a new generation of enthusiasts, improved organization and  training methods, and an update to its historical authenticity standards. Additionally, national events had exposed the fact that the public was greatly in need of of a deeper and more clear understanding of the War Between the States and its impact upon the present. These observations, combined with his love of the United States and all its people, inspired him to establish the Texas Civil War Living History Institute. The rest, you could say, is history.
